The Daily Eagle Brief — 2026-08-13: Hormuz Strikes and Black Sea Drone Barrage Lift War-Risk Premiums

US forces disabled a third vessel attempting to breach Hormuz in the past 24 hours, with CENTCOM striking the Panama-flagged Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman after similar actions against blockade runners. Tehran and Washington continue competing claims of control over the strait while tanker war-risk premiums reset higher. In the Black Sea, drone attacks drove spot rates for tankers to record levels even as Ukraine suspended strikes on vessels calling Novorossiysk at US request. These two theaters now dominate routing, insurance and scheduling decisions for operators moving crude and products. Charterers and owners face immediate choices on whether to accept higher deductibles or reroute via longer, costlier paths.
